To Assume

Hi, friends!! You know what this picture means ๐Ÿ˜€

What a good way to start a morning! My OOIAJ were made up of 1/3 cup oats, water and skim milk, 1/2 a banana, a pinch of Kashi Crisp!, Nutella and almond slivers.ย

I love waking up and not having to think about making breakfast! Does that qualify me as super lazy? ๐Ÿ˜‰

(No) Workout

I got up early to work out, but upon actually moving, I discovered an extremely sore back. Ouch! I’m not one to disregard pain, so there was no workout for me today. I figure I can take a day off and rest, or push through and hurt myself to the point where I’d have to take several days off. I think the choice is easy ๐Ÿ™‚

********************

So, yesterday I mentioned my new volunteer opportunity, but I didn’t want to talk about it until I had my first meeting. For privacy’s sake, I won’t mention the name of the program, but I am working with court-ordered domestic violence offenders.

I was shocked, because when I think “domestic violence” a certain type of person comes to mind. By “person” I mean anย uneducated, low income, male. But when I walked in, there were 4 white upper-middle class men in suits. Then three women showed up. Then more and more people started coming in and I realized I could know any one of these people.

I was embarrassed of my preconceived notions and biases. For me, this first group meeting reaffirmed just how important it is toย notย ย judge people and make assumptions. It reminded me of the little ditty my mom taught me about making assumptions…

Never forget how to spell “assume.” It makes an ASS out of U and ME ๐Ÿ˜‰

The program seems like an amazing one, and I’m so excited for the next 4 months of group.ย Needless to say, I am optimistic about this opportunity and I can’t wait to get to know the group better. It’s quite exciting!

I hope you and yours have a wonderful Wednesday! If all goes well, tonight could be my last Wednesday night class of the semester. Keep your fingers crossed!

Let’s chat – Did your breakfast make you happy like mine did? Do you volunteer?

love this girl! hahaha love your breakfast ๐Ÿ™‚ I need to get some more larabars that always make my morning a happy one! I need to volunteer but I have so many other things going on right now I just cant get to it! eeks! love ya bbff!

  2. Sounds like a great volunteer experience! Haha, I never forget how to spell ‘assume’ because my grade 6 teacher taught us that it makes an ASS out of U and ME and I remember being so shocked that he would write the ‘A’ word on the board!

  3. That’s a really neat place to volunteer. I definitely have preconceived notions about the types of people who would be domestic violence offenders. I think the media helps us to get these thoughs in our heads!

  4. That’s so cool that you’re volunteering for that program! I love volunteering!! I’m currently doing a probono project for a local arts center, and they have some really awesome programs. It’s a lot of fun!

  5. Trisha says:

Love oats in a jar ๐Ÿ™‚ That volunteering sounds so cool! I volunteer each week at an elementary school helping kids read, and I also volunteer for Special Olympics on a regular basis. Nothing feels so good as volunteering!

  6. My mom used to (still does) tell me that too! I volunteered with a women’s shelter when I was in grad school, and it was probably one of the most eye opening experiences of my life. Good for you…I think you’re going to make a huge difference in a lot of people’s lives!

  7. Jenny says:

I LOVE that little quote about making assumptions and I am definitely one to make them and later on realize how wrong I was. Always gotta give ppl the benefit of the doubt and make it an even playing field. Hope your volunteering opportunity goes fabulous, love your ooiaj btw. And it’s totally not lazy considering you have to make it the night before ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Michelle says:

Mmm I have to give OOIAJ another try… but I don’t go through peanut butter fast enough!! My breakfast this morning consisted of a not-quite-ripe fruit cup and a toasted bagel thin. Oh, the joys of traveling for work.

Sounds like a wonderful volunteer opportunity with the chance to learn quite a bit! I’m still looking for somewhere to volunteer that works with my weird schedule.

OIAJ is the best!i love having overnight oats waiting for me in the morning, it makes waking up seem like such a breeze!
ps- love the part about not judging. I think we can all by very judgemental at times but its so important to remember that everyone has a different story and a different life!

  10. I also had a nearly finished jar of almond butter and decided “hey! I’m going to make chocolate oats and put it in here!” For some odd reason, I didn’t care for the chocolate. Any suggestions? I want it to taste good! I used unsweetened cocoa powder.
Also, I volunteer at a center for kids with disabilities. I help them learn new skills- such as cooking!
Volunteering is such a great way to expand your horizons and to make yourself known in a community! I wish you the best of luck in your volunteer experience!

    • Colleen says:

Hi! Sorry you didn’t care for the chocolate! I’ve never used chocolate powder – I just add about a tablespoon of Nutella. Have you ever had that before?! It’s the only kind of “chocolate” I put in my oats ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. My breakfast made me happy until it made me bloated:( To be fair it wasn’t the breakfasts fault if you know what I mean…I have volunteered in the past and when I get back to school in the fall I want to find somewhere to be more active because I really love the feeling that comes with helping people!

  12. I have actually volunteered at a similar (sounding) organization! I was kind of embarrassed of the stereotypes I had going into it…they were just “regular people”, nothing like I had imagined!

I volunteer about once a month at various organizations. I used to be involved in College Mentors for Kids, and I really enjoyed that.

  13. Sorry about your back! That’s so awesome that you volunteer for an organization like that! I volunteer for the AHEPA Marrow Donor Registry currently! ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. I wish I could volunteer. I guess I could…my excuse would be I have no time, but I think you have to MAKE the time. I always admire people who volunteer ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Jess says:

    It’s great you are volunteering:)
I tutor Turkish refugees- it is a lot of fun!

  16. Katy says:

That’sgreat that your are volunteering. I probably would have had the same assumptions as you did, honestly.

I am going to try to volunteer at my brother’s school. Not exactly charity, but it’s a start. ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a great day!

  17. My breakfast always makes me happy and if I’m not happy before I workout and go to class, it’s all downhill from there ha. I’m glad you had such a good breakfast. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have yet to try OJIA…one day.

  18. Volunteering is good for the soul… good for you Colleen!! And genius breakfast.. I would look forward to that, too!! I think I might have to try it out:)
