Workout

I’m still living on campus, and the gym that opens early is now under construction for the summer. Womp. So it was back to P90X this morning.

I did lunges and squats until I was blue in the face. Okay. Not really, but I think you get the point. It was a legs and back day.Β 

Breakfast

There’s nothin’ that can make my morning great like a perfect cereal combo. It seems silly. I know. But there’s something about a bowl of cereal that I just love!

I have to eat my cereal with just enough time left before I have to leave for work, or I’ll pour myself a second bowl without hesitation πŸ™‚

Blogger App?

Who out there has an iPhone?? Well, I think I may have found the app for bloggers and foodies. Have you heard of Foodish? Cory found it on Gizmodo and sent it my way, and I think I’m going to purchase it.

It gives you a visual representation of what you’ve eaten for the day, or even for weeks at a time. There’s no calorie counting and no food weighing. It just seems kind of fun!

Why Does Misery Love Company?

Hello, my fine friends! How’s everyone feeling today?! I’m feeling a tad bit sluggish due to my inhalation of a piece of white chocolate – raspberry cheesecake last night at The Cheesecake Factory.

Cory and I shared this ginormous slice of heaven (minus the whipped cream.)

Do I feel guilty? Yes, I kind of do. Am I going to fret all day? No – I’m just going to do my best to make healthier decisions today. Easy peasy, lemon squeezey πŸ™‚

This morning I enjoyed a sweaty P90X plyometrics session which was swiftly followed up by my beloved cereal combo πŸ™‚

Quaker oatmeal squares, Honey Nut Cheerios, Kashi Crisp!, almond slivers and 1/2 a banana

I mean, I get it – kind of. If I’m feeling down in the dumps, I don’t necessarily want to throw you a party to celebrate something happy in your life.

I’d rather bitch and moan with a friend who likes vodka.

But those feelings are normally momentary – not a way of life. AndΒ let’s be honest; I’d still throw you a party if you deserved one πŸ˜‰

Anyway, Cory and I were talking yesterday about how we’ve noticed that some people are so quick to rain on a love parade (or any kind of parade, really.)

Here’s an example of a conversation that happened a few days ago:

Me: Yeah, we’re finally going to move in together after the wedding (insert giddy grin here) I’m so excited!

*Debby D: Wait – you’ve never lived together?!

Me: Nope. We wanted to wait.

Debby D: Woah. Psh.Β Humpf.(Cue more huffing and puffing) Get ready for the most difficult year of your life!

Me: Wow, thanks Debby. You’re quite the ray of sunshine. (<— Okay, this part happened in my head)

*Names may have been changed to protect the identity of a real life sour-puss.

Why are people like this?

Are they really that miserable?Β 

I truly hope not, because that would be tragic – but it’s disappointing how people so rarely want to tell you something positive.Β If someone is happy, why on Earth would another person feel the need to say something negative? This totally blows my mind.

I don’t have a profound conclusion to this thought (do I ever?) – but I wanted to get it out there. Maybe other people have experienced people like Debby D? Β 

Disclaimer: Let’s get real – encountering a Debby or Nancy doesn’t truly affect me, but it does make me wonder: WTF?

Where the Heck did Tuesday Go?!

Good morning, beauties! Thanks to all of you who giggled at my Break Up post. Clearly, Running and I have a hot-and-cold relationship, but I know it’s impossible to leave forever. I’ll be trotting along and wheezing again in no time πŸ™‚

Tuesday

Yesterday was busy for me – it was 8:30 when I got home, I kept getting sidetracked and blogging didn’t happen! I woke up bright and early for some Legs & Back action with the P90X gang. My work day was rather dull, but my lunch totally made up for it.

Pepper turkey, red pepper, tomato, apple slices, mustard and 1/4 avocado on light rye bread. Grad School Gourmet, ladies and gents πŸ˜‰

I also made a little pit-stop at Target and picked up a new purse (and tried on a million cute dresses)Β Seriously, it’s impossible to walk into that store and leave empty handed.

Obviously I will not be wearing this purse across my chest and holding it’s little handles at the same time – I simply wanted to showcase it’s stunning versatility. Just wanted to clear the air on that one πŸ˜‰

The rest of my day was splendid because I spent it with my parents πŸ™‚ My dad was amazing and came and switched cars with me while I was at work and he went to get my inspection done. That saved me a lot of time! He da best. My mom also found her mother-of-the-bride dress. She looked beautiful!

My parents took me out to dinner at this fabulous restaurant in Old Town called Overwood. My mom and I have concluded that it is impossible to order a bad meal from that place.

I ordered 1/2 a roasted chicken with red skinned mashed potatoes (hiding under the chicken!) and brussel sprouts.

Would you believe that this was the first time in my life that I’d ever eaten brussel sprouts?! I see them all over my favorite blogs and I’ve been itching to try them. I wasn’t disappointed!

I was stuffed by this meal, but I wasn’t feeling too guilty about anything. I was ready to get the check and go.Β Then the waitress uttered the d-word: dessert. We rarely get dessert when we eat out. My mom does not eat sweets of any kind. Ever. It’s insane. My dad on the other hand said, “Sure! Let’s look at the options.” Damn it, Dad. How am I supposed to say no to this?

Goodness gracious. Every bite was pure bliss. What is it about a hot brownie and cold vanilla ice cream? (I don’t touch chocolate ice cream)

Today

I slept in today because I’m planning on getting a workout in before class tonight.

I made myself a big bowl of cereal and it absolutely hit the spot.

1/2 cup Quaker Oatmeal Squares, 1/2 cup Honey Nut Cheerios and 1/2 a banana + pinches of Kashi Crisp!, oats, and almond slivers. Perfection.

Fresh Start

Good morning, friends! It’s a new week and Β most of us are back to the grind! You know, Monday’s get a bad wrap. I understand how coming off a weekend makes it difficult to get back in the swing of the work/school week, but I think attitude is everything. Could that be the counselor-in-training speaking? πŸ˜‰

I think Monday’s are a fresh start to healthy living. Does anyone else slightly “let themselves go” on the weekends? This girls certainly does! Aside from getting my eating habits back to normal, there are several things that I do Β that make for a happy beginning of the week.

I make a short list of goals (both fun and serious) that I want to accomplish during the upcoming week

I schedule my workouts. I don’t know about you, but when I get knee-deep into the week, my workouts will start to slack if I don’t have a solid plan. Once they’re written down, they’re 10 times more likely to happen.

I’ve started “quote of the week.” I find a quote that motivates and inspires me and I pin it up next to my bathroom mirror. I love looking at it every morning when I’m getting ready for the day.

It sounds counterintuitive, but on Monday’s I get up a few minutes earlier than usual. This assures that I won’t feel rushed or end up running late. Frazzled + running late = the worst way to start a week.

I usually find something to look forward to – big or small. Maybe treating myself to coffee on Thursday. Or dinner with my parents. Or a date-night in. This week, I’m looking forward to my brother coming home!! πŸ™‚ I haven’t seen him in 2 months!

Workout

This morning I woke up and did Ab Ripper X with Tony and the P90X gang. I was going to lift weights, but my arms are still sore from this weekend’s lifting sesh. As you can tell from the picture above, I’m planning on heading to the gym after work for some QT with the treadmill πŸ˜‰

Breakfast

It has been over a week since I’ve had oats of any kind (gasp!) I couldn’t workout and shower fast enough knowing that I had overnight oats waiting for me! Trust me, they did not disappoint πŸ™‚

1/3 cup oats + 1/3 cup water + 1/3 cup skim milk + 1 tbsp pomegranate Chobani + PB + Nutella + Kashi + 1/2 a banana. That’s a whole lotta stuff in one bowl!

Looks like I’m running on time this morning – thank God! I’m off to work. I’ll catch ya later!

Losers Make Excuses, Winners Make It Happen

This is what I told myself this afternoon, but more on that in a minute πŸ™‚

I got up bright and early this morning and worked out with Tony and the P90X gang for 40 minutes of Back & Biceps. It felt good, but it didn’t leave me with the feeling of “yeah – that totally counted as a workout.” Do you know that feeling? Either way, I celebrated with my over night oats. πŸ˜‰

Work today was Lame City, and keeping with the theme I had a less-than-stellar lunch of a turkey sandwich, an apple and some Kashi crackers. I didn’t take a picture because I feel like I’ve posted 10 pictures of the same sandwich. It’s old news.

After work I headed to the grocery store! It wasn’t a huge shopping trip, as I’m going away for the weekend (!!!) I just needed enough food to get me through the week – and then a little extra. The last things I want to do when I come home from a weekend away is a) clean b) do laundry and c) need to go grocery shopping.

Here’s what I got!

On the drive home form work I toyed with the idea of an afternoon workout. (I think this trend is catching on!) Β But I don’t really have to – I thought –Β I mean, I did work out this morning. But why NOT go? I was just going to sit around if I didn’t. I stopped making excuses and just did it.

So I put my groceries away and jogged over to the gym for 30 minutes on the elliptical + 15 minutes on the stair master. I know the elliptical gets a bad rap for being a “cop out” to the treadmill, but I’m still trying to take it easy on the knees (my God, how old am I?!) I made sure to up the resistance and I ended up with yeah, this totally counted feeling πŸ˜‰

I haven’t felt so hot after my workout, so dinner was 1 cup of butternut squash soup with a few pretzel nibblers on the side. Yes, I do like to keep it classy with paper towels as plates. No big.

I had never had butternut squash soup before, but it was really good!

Today is starting off on a good foot. Maybe you’ll agree as you make your way through this post πŸ™‚ My workout was an intense 40 minutes of plyometrics and I feel like I sweat out every morsel of scones that I devoured this weekend πŸ˜‰

My friend from grade school, Emily, wrote on my Facebook wall yesterday asking for clairification about overnight oats in a jar – and it really got me in the mood for some. Although I’m not at the end of my PB (thank God!) I did put some oats in the fridge last night. 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup water, 1/3 cup milk, ~1 tbsp of pomegranate Chobani topped with half a banana, almond slivers and a pinch of my Whole Foods tail mix πŸ˜€ Adding the pom Chobani made for such a great addition! It was so creamy – just perfect! (It looked very similar to yesterday’s oats)

On to the good stuff!

I don’t know about you, but I’m all about free stuff or a good deal. Call me frugal, but I clip coupons because it’s almost like getting something for free. When I shop for clothes and shoes, I hightail it straight to the SALE rack like it’s nobody’s business. And I think it’s fun to shop with a gift card because it’s literally free money, right??

It’s the Freakin’ Weekend!

It’s the freakin’ weekend, baby I’m about to have me some fun πŸ˜‰ I have SUCH a fun Friday ahead of me!!

This Friday is a little different because I have to go to work. Womp womp. But only for the first half of the day, so I really don’t have anything to complain about πŸ˜‰ Later on, Cory and I have a pretty flippin’ fantastic night out on the town planned. I don’t want to give it away until I have pictures to document it’s awesomeness, but I’m excited!

When I woke up this morning I felt like my body was just one huge muscle knot. Uh, I was stiff as a board. I had contemplated running to the gym this morning, but the windy/rainy/cold combo made up my mind for me – and I’m pretty grateful! I entered uncharted P90X territory this morning when I popped in X Stretch.

It was fabulous and just what I needed!Β My pal Tony started off by saying “Today we’re going to take care of ourselves.” Hey, I can’t argue with that! We (“we” like Tony and I are workout buds) started off with some yoga moves..poses..sun salutations? Whatever. Here’s my problem: My wrists hurt when I do yoga. Help me yogis- is that normal? How do I fix it?

Post-stretch I mixed it up a little in the breakfast world. I had to breathe into a paper bag enjoyed a PB&N banana (is it weird that every time I have to spell ‘banana’ I sing that Gwen Stefani song?’). It was delish and it hit the spot πŸ™‚

I’m also enjoying a mug ‘o tea at the office πŸ™‚ I double timed it on the tea bags today. One just hasn’t been enough flava flave for me.

Just in case my day gets super busy, I wanted to post for Day Number 2 of the 30DPC πŸ™‚

If I Was Thrown Into Rehab…

This is one of my all time favorite quotes and I wanted to share it with you (as StumbleUpon wanted to do with me) Side note: If you’d rather I keep my SU obsessions/finds to myself – please leave me a comment and tell me so! I understand that it may seem like a little too much too soon. I love quotes – but I love you more πŸ˜‰

My morning’s workout was all about legs & back, baby. I was doing squats, lunges, skaters and wall sits all over my room this morning. I threw in some moves with the resistance bands for some back work and called it a day!

Breakfast was Nutella and PB oats. Mmm, good! πŸ˜€

And like any normal, well-adjusted 23-year-old, I drank my milk out of my cow mug

I know, it’s a slightly graphic mug – but I enjoy it πŸ™‚

Okay – I need your opinion. I’ve mentioned before that I’m currently taking a Substance Abuse class (for counseling, of course). We have been assigned a two-week project that involves ending/stopping/quitting an activity or habit that that can be defined as a negative behavior or “addiction”*Β that we enjoy (i.e. speeding or drinking 3 sodas a day)Β – and replacing it with something healthier. The main idea is: How are we, as counselors, supposed to be able to tell substance abusing clients to just “cut it out” (which we can’t!) if we have never given up something that we enjoy.

I don’t have too many habits that negatively affect me, but I do have some “addictions” that would be seriously difficult to give up if I was thrown into rehab. I toyed with the idea of taking away cereal, but my professor advised us not to do anything too drastic or life altering πŸ˜‰

So, here’s what I’m thinking:

1. Give up PB (AH!) and replace with Greek yogurt

2. Give up Facebook and replace with phone conversation

3. Give up technology after 8 PM and replace with reading for pleasure or journaling

I know they sound semi-lame, but I’d truly have a tough time giving up anything of these things. (Remember it’s only for two weeks.)

Which one should I choose?! I’m open different ideas, too. If you had to do this project, what would you choose as your problem behavior and your treatment?

Happy Anniversary!

To who? To US! The Lunchbox Diaries has been up and running for one whole month today πŸ˜€ Let’s call off work and go eat cupcakes!

It may sound silly, but creating and keeping up with this blog has brought me so much happiness. I’ve never felt like I’ve had a thing – if that makes any sense. My brother’s things have been baseball and music (he taught himself to play the guitar and the piano!)

Cory’s thing is being business savvy. I don’t have a picture for that πŸ˜‰

My mom’s thing is being the huge sports nut. (At a National’s game with 3 – of her 7 – brothers, my cousin and his wife)

My dad’s thing is being a huge music and history buff.

My thing has always been writing – but it was private and only for myself, so I felt like I had nothing to show for it. I felt that I wasΒ thing-less.

Don’t get me wrong! That is not meant to be a woe-is-me statement. Writing (and more recently, healthy living/fitness) has always brought me happiness even if it was only for myself. I just never felt like I had an appropriate outlet to showcase it or experiment with it.

Well, it may have taken 23 years, but I finally have a thing that I can call my own πŸ˜€ Blogging has made me more excited about the everyday aspect of life. Everything I do and experience serves as inspiration for what I’m going to write about next. I’m more aware and I look forward to every moment – I’m more present – because who knows? It could just so happen to be my next blog post. And that makes me excited.

My workout came and went before the sun even rose – yikes. I did the full Β P90X Shoulder & Arms workout, because I only did 15 minutes of it last week and I really like it. Plus, I’m still working towards my Jennifer Garner arms.

Not there yet. But I’m workin’ on it, guys! πŸ™‚

My breakfast was delish! Yet another cereal combo. While I was creating this concoction this morning, I thought about how fantastic it would be if there was a restaurant that had, instead of a salad bar – a cereal bar! I’d be there all day, everyday πŸ˜‰Β I don’t just eat a plain bowl of cereal, my friends. I add all different kinds of cereal together, I add nuts and fruit. And I love it. Every time πŸ˜€

This morning’s mash up was Quaker Oats Oatmeal Squares, Honey Nut Cheerios and Kashi Go Lean Crisp! with almond slivers and half a banana. It was essentially a party in my mouth.

If loving cereal is wrong, I sure as heck don’t want to be right.

Biceps and Legs and Core – Oh My!

Good morning, friends! πŸ˜€ I love ThursdaysΒ because they’re like my Fridays. Trust me, it’s a long day – so I totally earn it πŸ˜‰

This morning I slightly impressed myself and got a little creative with Tony and the P90X gang. The DVDs each focus on one region – such as arms, legs, cardio, etc. – but I was in the market for a full body workout at 5:15 this morning πŸ˜‰

I ended up doing 15 minutes of Shoulders & Arms, 15 minutes of Legs & Back (but only did leg exercises) & 10-12 minutes of Ab Ripper X – there are just some moves on there that I skip because I simple can’t do them πŸ˜‰Β That said, I’m feelin’ pretty good! Did you get a good workout in this morning?

I read an interesting article on Self.com about how often a person needs to workout per week. I was shocked to read that the most current research shows that we need to being doing aroundΒ 150 minutes per week – that’s only 2 and a half hours per week. When you think about it in those terms, it seems totally doable. Although, the article does state that the amount needs to be upped if you’re trying to lose weight. Anyway! I just thought you’d be interested πŸ™‚

So, I’m not sure how this happened, but I had an epic fail with my overnight oats (?!) Last night I put in the usual mix, but they were way watery this morning. Yuck. So I just went ahead and made regular hot oats instead.

Courtney put some Quaker Oatmeal Squares in her oats yesterday and I thought it was a brilliant idea!

Besides being pumped about my mash-up of a workout this morning, I’m also pumped because I got a free t-shirt at work yesterday and I get to wear it to today πŸ™‚ I 1. love free t-shirts and 2. love long-sleeved t-shirts. It was a red-letter day, friends!

I love being able to wear t-shirts and jeans to work! πŸ™‚
